ULI's Educational Forum, August 2006

The University Leadership Initiative conducted an educational forum for parents who have questions about college and university admissions for students who may have immigration concerns. Well over 80 individuals participated in the evening session.

 



March Against the Minutemen & Rally for a DREAM

 

Our University Leadership Initiative organized a several-hundred-person march and rally in Austin on September 17, 2005, to promote real solutions to the current immigration crisis.

Restoring the Treatment Initiative Lobby Day

On March 28, 2005, the Winner’s Circle Peer Support Network hosted a lobby day for more than 130 statewide participants to advocate for a restoration of the Texas Treatment Initiative. Participants focused on the tools and resources (e.g., support groups, treatment programs, and referrals) that offenders require upon re-entry.

Second Chance Lobby Day

On March 7th, 2005, the Ministry Advisory Council (MAC, Inc.) sponsored a Second Chance Lobby Day at the state capitol, where nearly 400 participants advocated for reform measures that would benefit formerly incarcerated individuals, including improved and expanded drug treatment programs, effective and proven alternatives to incarceration, and an end to the prison crisis in Texas communities.

Texas LULAC and NAACP Young Adult Conference and Legislative Mobilization Day

On February 26th and 27th, 2005, Texas State NAACP and Texas LULAC hosted a Young Adult Conference in Austin featuring advocacy and educational trainings for participants, as well as legislative updates and presentations by state leaders.

On February 28th, the groups organized a joint Legislative Mobilization Day at the Texas state capitol, during which more than 250 participants advocated that legislators be smart on crime vs. tough on crime with proven pro-family criminal justice policies; prevent additional tuition hikes; protect the Top Ten Percent rule as it now stands; push for a real assessment of Texas students’ abilities –not a reliance merely on test scores; ensure that Texas schools receive the fair and reliable funding they need; ban the discriminatory practice of credit scoring; and ensure that Texas children receive adequate health care.
