Transforming Juvenile Justice in Texas: A Framework for Action: This report summarizes the recommendations of a Blue Ribbon Task Force made up of juvenile justice experts and practitioners from across the nation. The Task Force was commissioned by TYC and was organized by the University of Texas’ School of Social Work. The report attempts to address the following questions: (1) If we could re-design healthcare, education, treatment, and case management at TYC correctional facilities, what would it look like?; and (2) If we could re-design the juvenile justice system in Texas, what would it look like? State Auditor’s Office Report on TYC: Once information about abuse and neglect in TYC became public, the Legislative Audit Committee ordered the State Auditor’s Office to conduct a comprehensive audit of TYC operations and finances. Among other issues, the Auditor’s office found that TYC’s allocation of resources, organizational structure, and employee hiring and disciplinary practices should be thoroughly re-evaluated to guarantee that TYC can function in the most effective manner possible. A Blueprint for Meeting the Needs of Girls in TYC Custody: This report by the Women’s Rights Project of the national American Civil Liberties Union examines the specific needs of girls who are incarcerated in TYC facilities, and it makes recommendations for improving the quality of care provided to Texas’ incarcerated girls.
